Robust means that something is sturdy or able to hold up. This is an important quality to have when it comes to products, because customers want a product they can trust and depend on. They want to purchase products that meet their standards. In order to meet customer expectations, companies often engage in robust product designwhich is the process of trying to reduce variations in finished products. In other words, it is the process of making sure that finished products maintain their consistency even when factors interfere with the production process. Those factors or variations in production are often called noise.Modular design, or "modularity in design", is a design approach that subdivides a system into smaller parts called modules or skids, that can be independently created and then used in different systems. A modular system can be characterized by functional partitioning into discrete scalable, reusable modules; rigorous use of well-defined modular interfaces; and making use of industry standards for interfaces.

Modular design, or modularity in design, is a design theory and practice that subdivides a system into smaller parts called modules (such as modular process skids), which can be independently created, modified, replaced or exchanged between different systems.
