Moment of inertia➫ A measure of a body's resistance to angular acceleration, equal to the product of the mass of the body & the square of its distance from the axis of rotation.

❱ It is also called angular mass.

❱ It is a rotating body's resistance to angular acceleration or deceleration.

❱ It's SI unit is kg m^2.

❱ The mass of a body is roughly a measure of its inertia or resistance to a change in its state of motion.

❱ It is the perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation to a point mass.

  • The measure of the property of virtue of which a body revolving about an axis opposes any changes in rotational motion is known as moment of inertia.
  • The moment of inertia of a particle with respect to an axis of rotation is equal to the product of its mass and the square ot its distance from the rotation axis. I =mr^2
  • Moment of inertia it a system of particles l = m1r1^2 + m2r2^2...
  • Σ mr^2
  • For a continuous body
  • I = ∫r^2 dm
  • Moment of. Inertia depends upon a) mass of body b) mass distribution of body c) position of axis of rotation
  • Unit : kg-m^2
  • Dimensions :[M^1 L^2 T^0]
