Mond's process was named after the scientist Ludwig Mond. This process is also known as carbonyl process and is used to extract and purify nickel.

This Mond process involves three steps for purification of Nickel.

1) First step: a mixture of hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide gas is added to the Nickel. In this reaction, an impure solid Nickel is formed.

2) Second step: pure Nickel present in the impure solid Nickel will readily react with carbon monoxide gas to form Nickel carbonyl gas.

3) Final step: Nickel carbonyl gas on heating decomposes to form pure Nickel and carbon monoxide.

This process is completed by use of a method called vapour phase refining.

Answer:

Mond process is used for refining of nickel.

When impure nickel is heated in a current of CO at 30-350 K, it forms volatile nickel tetracarbonyl complex leaving behind the impurities. The nickel tetracrbonyl thus obtained is then hetaed to a higher temperature of 450-470 K when it undergoes thermal decomposition giving pure nickel.

Ni+4CO\overset{330-350K}\rightarrow Ni(CO)_4

Ni(CO)_4\overset{450-470K}\rightarrow Ni+4CO
