The most dramatic moment in the story The Model Millionaire is when the painter Alan Trevor revealed to his friend Hughie Erskine the truth about the beggar who posed as a model for his painting. He was actually Baron Hausberg, the wealthiest man in the country.
Earlier Hughie had taken pity on the man and had given him a sovereign, the only money he had with him. When he told Alan about this, the latter had a good laugh and said that the baron had paid him a commission of a million guineas in advance to get himself painted as a beggar.
Alan told Hughie that it would be best for him to forget about the sovereign. The very next day, an old gentleman comes to the residence of Hughie on behalf of the baron with a cheque for £10,000 as a wedding gift for Hughie. Not only that he made a speech at the wedding breakfast.
