Multiple fission is a special type of fission where the nucleus of the parent cell divides several times by amitosis and produces several nuclei. Plasmodium is an organism which exhibits this type of reproduction.

  • In this type of fission the nucleus undergoes several mitotic divisions, producing a number of nuclei. After the nuclear divisions are complete, the cytoplasm separates and each nucleus becomes encased in its own membrane creating multiple daughter cells.
  • Some parasitic, single-celled organisms undergo a multiple fission-like process to produce numerous daughter cells from a single parent cell. This is similar to binary fission but here the cell divides into more than two parts.
  • Plasmodium is one of such organisms which exhibits this type of reproduction.
