Natural fibers or natural fibres are fibers that are produced by plants, animals, and geological processes. They can be used as a component of composite materials, where the orientation of fibers impacts the properties. Natural fibers can also be matted into sheets to make paper or felt
☆ Natural fibres ☆
Fibres obtained from natural sources are called natural fibres.
These may be of two types :-
- Animal fibres
- Plant fibres
• Animal fibres :- That kept body warm and protected. We use fleece of such animal to make our cloth. For example, wool is obtained from the fleece of sheep. Cashmere wool is obtained from cashmere goat . The hair of yak, camel, alpaca and vicuna are also used to make woolen clothes. Fur of mink, rabbit and muskrat are used for making coats, jackets, etc.
Angora wool, that is considered to be a very fine wool, is obtained from angora rabbit.
While angora goat is used to extend another wool called morhair.
Silk, that is considered to be very fine material is obtained from the cocoon of a small insect called silk moth.
Besides this, skins of many animals like there are used to produce leather. Leather is used to make jackets, belt, purses, gloves, etc.
• Plant fibres :- These are obtained from plant sources. Main plant fibres are cotton, jute, flax and hemp etc. In addition to these coconut fibres are also taken in various uses like making ropes, mattresses and decorative.
