SEBI (securities and exchange board of India) was built in 1988  by Indian government yet got the real power in 1991 and supposed to play an important role in the economy of the country. Now it plays an important role in;

Restricting illegal practices throughout the country.
Protecting investors interest within the country
Keeping an eye on working of exchange.
conducting regular audit of the stock exchange to keep an eye on it.
Prohibiting insider activities.

also, the SEBI palys an important role in catching the major scams throughout the country tlll now which help in maintaining transparency in the economy.
