originally nephron is the basic structural and functional unit of the kidney.....it regulates the concentration of water and other soluble maerials like sodium salts by filtering the blood and  again absorbing what is needed and excrete  the unwanted substances out of the body in the form of urine

Nephron is the basic structural and functional unit of the kidney. It consists of a glomerulus and its associated tubule, through which the glomerular filtrate passes before emerging as urine.
