What is neutralization ?
Give example of neutralization in our daily life

How to neutralize the effect of ant bite, Soil treatment, Indigestion ?

What is phenolphthalein ? Explain the changes occur when its there in acid and base or neutral solutions .

Hey there !

Thanks for the question !

Here's the answer !

1) Neutralisation reaction is the reaction that occurs between an acid and a base to form their respective salt and water.

Reaction: Acid + Base => Salt + Water

Example : During Acidity we take antacid tablets. These are actually mild bases like Milk of magnesia which on reacting with Hydrochloric acid in stomach provide relief to acidity.

The effect of an ant bite is caused by Methanoic Acid. Hence on applying any strong base we can neutralise the effect. Normally Baking Soda

( NaHCO₃ ) is applied to neutralise the effect.

When there is too much of acidic content in soil, the plants tend to die and wilt away. Hence farmers add basic fertilisers which neutralise the soil thereby causing a neutral and healthy soil.

Indigestion can be treated by Milk of Magnesia. The reaction is as follows:

Mg(OH)₂ +HCl => MgCl₂ + H₂O

For explanation refer the above example.

Phenolphthalein is used as an indicator in the chemistry labs. It is usually pinkish in colour and when added to acid it turns colourless. Hence it is known as the indicator of acid.  In basic solutions, it remains pink in colour with no changes. The same condition of pink colour is noticed in neutral solutions.

Hope I cleared all your queries !

==========================================================

♦Neutralization => When an Acid reacts with a Base , they nullify each other's effect leading to the production of Salt and Water . Such a reaction between an Acid and a Base is termed as "Neutralization" .

Example :-
==========

HCl + NaOH ------------------> NaCl + H2O

♦Examples from daily life =>
======================

➰We are advised to brush twice . This is because the basic nature of the toothpaste neutralizes the acids secreted in the mouth . Ph value of less than 5.5 can lead to tooth decay .

➰Another common example is when a person suffers from acidity , he is advised to take antacid tablets as the excessive Acid is neutralized by the antacids that is basic in nature .

✔How to neutralise the effect of =>

♦Ant Bite => When an Ant bites , it secretes Formic Acid in the body . This causes a burning pain . It's Cure is to apply Calamine Solution which neutralizes the Acid secreted by the ant.

♦Indigestion => It is caused due to excessive Amount of HCl in the stomach walls that can lead to uncomfortable situation for the person . It can be neutralized by adopting a suitable Antacid tablet . A common one is Milk of Magnesia that being basic neutralizes the excessive Acid providing relief !

♦Soil Treatment => There are two possible cases :-

➡Acidic soil => Lime , Wood Ash can increase the Ph.

➡Alkaline Soil => Sulfur , Acidified Fertilizer or Compost can lower the Ph.

♦Phenolphathalein => It is a Synthetic Indicator. It's effects on Acidic and Basic Medium are =>>

✔Acid -> Colorless

✔Base -> Pink
