Newlands Law of Octaves is an attempt to find tabulate various chemical elements like H2 , Calcium Ca.  This is based on the observed physical and chemical properties of the elements. Also based on the Atomic numbers and weights.

John Alexander Newlands invented this law in 1865. This was after Dobereiner's law of Triads failed to explain the tabulation for heavier elements.

Every eighth element in the increasing order of atomic weight seemed to have similar behavior.  This is similar to the eight note (swar, sur) in music being a repetition of the first note.

However this was found to be valid upto the element Calcium.  Later on Mendeleev formulated a periodic table quite similar to what we are using now.
