Every object continue in a state of rest or of uniform motion by itself unless it is compelled by an external force to change that state.Newton's first law of motion is also termed as law of inertia.Inertia is the inability of a body to change its state of motion by itself.

Newton's first law is derived from the Galileo's law of inertia.
It states that if a body is in the state of rest or in the state of motion in a particular direction it continues to be in its same state and same direction unless an untill an external force is applied to it.
