Right question is

What is nitrogen fixation?

Answer..

The fixing of atmospheric nitrogen gas by converting it into compounds of nitrogen ( which can be used by the plants) in the soil is known as nitrogen fixation.

The 'nitrogen gas' is the 'free nitrogen' whereas 'nitrogen compounds' are said to be 'fixed nitrogen'.
