Nitrogen fixation

Nitrogen is one of the macro nutrients required for overall plant growth and development. But even though it is abundant in atmosphere unfortunately plants cannot use it as such. So plants absorb nitrate ,nitrite and ammonium ions as a source of nitrogen. Reduction of nitrogen to ammonia by living organisms is called biological nitrogen fixation. Only some prokaryotic species can fix atmospheric nitrogen.
