t he chemical processes by which atmospheric nitrogen is assimilated into organic compounds, especially by certain microorganisms as part of the nitrogen cycle.

nitrogen-fixing bacteria are microorganisms present in the soil or in plant roots that change nitrogen gases from the atmosphere into solid nitrogen compounds that plants can use in the soil.

Nitrogen Fixation is the process of converting nitrogen present in air to simpler form which can be easily used by the living organisms.

The Nitrogen present in atmosphere is of no use to most of the living organisms.

The Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria plays a vital role in Nitrogen Cycle. These bacterias are called as Diazotrophs. These bacterias can either be symbiotically or be non-symbiotically present in association with the root of the plants.

Symbiotic relationship is present in the legumes which have root nodules in their roots. These root nodules help the plant to absorb the atmospherically present nitrogen and utilise it for it's own use.

Non-symbiotic relationships are referred to as associative which are often seen in rice plants.

Lightning is helpful too in the process of Nitrogen Fixation. Nitrogen in atmisphere us highly stable and non reactive due to the triple bond between the nitrogen atoms. Lightning creates enough energy to break this bond and allow nitrogen to react with oxygen to form oxides of nitrogen. This way lightning helps in the formation of usable nitrogen.
