n= the principal quantum number of the subshell
l= the secondary quantum number of the subshell
ml=0,s subshell
ml=1,p subshell
ml=2,d subshell
ml=3,f subshell
x= the number of electrons in the subshell

Thus, the electron configuration of chromium using the nlx notation is

1s2l2s22p6l3s23p6l4s13d5
