When hydrochloric acid is added to sodium carbonate, brisk effervescence of CO2 occurs, along with the formation of sodium chloride and water.It will depend on the relative amounts of HCl and Na2CO3 added together, because the complete neutralisation of Na2CO3 with HCl happens in two separate stages.
