When SO2 is passed through water, we get an oily viscous liquid, which is less corrosive in nature. Actually we get sulphurous acid. When sulphur dioxide is passed through lime water lime water turns milky, due to formation of calcium sulphite. Note that Calcium sulphite is milky white in colour.
