Ohm's law states that resistance R is inversely proportional to current I ie.

R α 1/I [ here see that the sign is used is proportional. It is not to be confused with alpha]

=> R = ρ/I

=> ρ = RI where ρ is the proportionality constant called electrical resistivity of the substance.

It is useful because it tells us about the resistivity of the given material.
