Here is your answer:

One joule work is defined as the amount of energy released or exerted when a force of 1 Newton is applied over a displacement of 1m . 

( Work done = Force x Displacement )

We can also say this as,  One watt power radiated or dissipated  for a second. 

(Work done = Watts / Sec)
