Oogenesis is the differentiation of the ovum(egg cell) into a cell competent to further develop when fertilized. It is developed from the primary oocyte by maturation. Oogenesis is initiated in the embryonic stage.

Answer :-

In general terms, Oogenesis can be defined as the process of maturation of the reproductive cells in the ovaries.

Extra Information :-

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • Basically, Oogenesis is similar to the process of "Spermatogenesis.
  • Oogenesis includes- Phase of multiplication, Phase of growth and Phase of maturation.
  • During the phase of multiplication, the primordial cells in the ovary divide mitotically to form Oogenia.
  • Oogenia are also known as "Egg mother cells".
  • Each Oogonium divides mitotically to form two primary "Ooyocytes".
  • Primary Ooyocytes undergo growth.
  • During the phase of maturation, the primary Ooyocytes (2n) undergo meiosis I, producing two haploid cells (n).
  • The larger haploid cell becomes the secondary Ooyocyte.
  • The smaller haploid cell becomes the first polar body.
  • Meiosis II of the secondary Ooyocyte results in the formation of functional eggs (ovum) and a second polar body.
  • In Oogenesis, only one of the four products of meiosis becomes a functional egg. The rest three products of meiosis are the non-functional polar bodies which finally get degenerated.
