Organic farming in the simplest terms is growing crops without any synthetic help. Which means no use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, GM seeds, growth regulators. From maintaing soil productivity to supplying plant nutrients to controlling weeds, pests, only natural methods are used.
Obviously we weren't using any kind of synthetic things in our fields ages ago. But the rise in population and to feed them all, we introduced new means (including green revolution in India ) . These means had high input use, but it has reached a plateau stage and is now sustained with diminished returns of falling dividends.
Artificial fertilizers were first introduced during the 19th century. They were cheap, powerful and easy to transport in bulk. These agricultural techniques benefitted in short term but had serious long term side effects such as soil erosion, decline in overall soil health and fertility, alongwith health concerns about toxic chemicals entering the food.
The first step in organic farming after introduction of synthetic means, happened in 1924 with the introduction of Biodynamic Agriculture.
Albert Howard, known as the father of organic farming published a book in 1940 namely, 'An Agricultural Testament’ whereby he applied scientific knowledge and principles to various traditional and natural methods.
