Healthy soil is teeming with microscopic and larger organisms that perform many vital functions including converting dead and decaying matter as well as minerals to plant nutrients. Different soil organisms feed on different organic substrates. Their biological activity depends on the organic matter supply.

of organic matter to plants:

 Healthy soil is

required to produce healthy crops. Plant take nutrients from soil from 2

sources namely – organic matter and minerals. Organic matters present in the

soil provide not only nutrients and habitat but also binds the soil particles

together to improve the water holding capacity of the soil. Soil usually

contains 2-10 % organic matter. Even a small amount increases the fertility of the soil
