The active regulation of the osmotic pressure of an organism's fluids to maintain the homeostasis of the organism's water content is known asOsmoregulation;this means it keeps the organism's fluids from becoming too diluted or too concentrated. Osmotic pressure is ameasure of the tendency of water to move into one solution from anotherby osmosis.Osmosis is the movement of solvent molecules through a selectively-permeablemembrane into a region of higher solute concentration, aiming to equalize the solute concentrations on thetwo sides. Higher the osmotic pressure of asolution, more water moves into the solution. Pressure must be exerted on the hypertonic side ofa selectively-permeable membraneto prevent diffusion of water by osmosis from the side containing pure water.
