The movement of an solution from higher concentration to lower concentration is called as the process of Osmosis.

There are three types of Osmosis. They are :

1. Hypertonic Solution : If a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, the contents of the cell will leave the cell body and get mixed into the solution. Therefore in an hypertonic solution the concentration of the external medium is low than the cell due to which the cell shrinks.

2. Hypotonic Solution : If a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution where the contents of the solution have higher concentration than the cell, then the cell becomes larger due to movement of external medium inside. Hence the cell gets bulged.

3. Isotonic Solution : If a cell placed in a solution neither gets bulged nor shrinks, then the solution is called isotonic meaning that the solution is neutral. Isotonic Solution is actually Pure Water.

osmosis is the movement of water from higher concentration to lower concentration through a semi permeable (accept partially ) membrane.
hypotonic -when the medium surrounding the cell has lower water concentration than the cell that solution is hypotonic solution. In this cell will lose water through osmosis and will shrink as in case of rasin.
isotonic -when the medium surrounding the cell has equal water cincentration that of cell then the solution is isotonic .NO loss or gain of water will be there.
hypertonic-.when the medium surrounding the cell has higher water concentration than cell that solution is hypertonic. In this cell will gain water by osmosis and will swallow.
