Question : -

What is ovum and sperm?

Answer : -

Ovum : -

Ovum is a female gamete produce by the female reproductive system. Ovum is also called as egg or ova (in plural). An ovum or egg always contains x chromosome and it doesn't determine the sex of the child.

Sperm : -

Sperm is the male reproductive gamete. It is reproduced by testis. Actually, sperm only decides the sex of the child. If it contains xy chromosomes, the child will be a boy child. If it contains xx chromosomes, the child will be a girl child. Whereas, ovum has only one chromosome and doesn't determine the sex of the child. The word sperm is derived from a Greek word meaning, "seeds."

When ovum and sperm fuse together, they form a zygote which is the result of fusion of male and female gamete which further develop into embryo.
