The Proposal written by Antin Chekhov is about the tendency of wealthy families to seek matrimonial ties. The real purpose is to expand their landed properties and estates. Ivan Lomov was an affluent neighbour of Stepan Chubukov, another wealthy farmer. Lomov comes to ask for the hand of the 25-year-old daughter of Chubukov, Natalya. Tomov, Chubukov, and Natalya— all three are petulant individuals. They keep quarrelling over minor or small things. Each of them has a claim over a specific piece of land (oxen meadow). Amidst this quarrelling, they forget the real problem— the marriage proposal — in the middle of this dispute. In the end, though, good sense prevails. Good economic sense means the plan is made. Chubukov doesn't want to miss the chance. He places the hand of his daughter in the hands of Lomov. No time is wasted and he blesses them. Old habits, though, die hard. The newly married couple begins a fresh quarrel with their married life.

EXPLANATION:

• ‘Oxen Meadows’, which is actually grassland, however in this story it represent the sturdy wills of Ivan and Natalya. Both are certain that they have real ownership dating back 100 of years, and both feel offended that the other was able to dare think it belonged to him/her.
• It appears that this was a non-negotiable point till Ivan leaves and Natalya comes to know that Ivan had in fact come to propose (seek her hand) to her. All of a sudden, she is quite prepared to accept that Ivan is the real owner of the Oxen Meadows.
