In the oxidation reaction, the loss of the electrons is done in favor of another reagent called "oxidant". In fact, the role of the oxidant is often played by oxygen. Thus, in the chemical reaction which involves carbon and oxygen, for example, carbon dioxide formation occurs by oxidation.
