Oxidation :

The loss of oxygen and gain of hydrogen in a chemical reaction is called as oxidation.

  • In simple words, It is the loss of electrons.

Examples,

The metal is oxidised because of air, water, oxygen and temperature. It is called rust. So, The oxirised metal will form the metal oxide.

  • \sf 2Fe \ + \ O_2 \longrightarrow 2FeO

Where,

  • Fe is symbol of iron.
  • O is the symbol of oxygen.

When the metal reacts with the oxygen then they form oxides.

Some Examples of oxidation are :

1. \sf 2Mg \ + \ O_2 \longrightarrow 2MgO

  • Magnesium reacts with oxygen to forms Magnesium oxide.

2. \sf 2Cu \ + \ O_2 \longrightarrow 2CuO

  • Copper reacts with oxygen to forms copper oxide.
