Oxidation number is a number or charge assigned to elements in combined state, ie if two elements are chemically combined the more elctronegative atom gets a negative charge and the less electronegative atom gets a positive charge for example in SO2 ie sulphur dioxide the sulphur is bonded with two oxygen atom by double covalent bond , therefore for each covalent bond sulpher is assigned one + 've charge and oxygen one negetive charge therefore total charge on sulphur atom(less electronegative) is +4 and each oxygen atom is -4/2= -2.
