The placenta is a large, flat, fleshy organ which begins to grow when a fertilised egg is implanted in the lining of the uterus (endometrium).
The placenta is joined to the inside of the uterus and the baby via the umbilical cord, the placenta transfers nutrients and oxygenated blood to the fetus through the cord, filters the blood and removes waste products which are carried out into the mothers bloodstream where they’re removed via her organs.
