Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas.

  • SIGN AND SYMPTOMS: there is epigastric pain (epigastric is a region near upper abdomen and lower chest. ), vomiting , loss of appetite  (the person loses interest in eating), fever , tachycardia (increase in  heartbeat) , dyspnoea (respiratory distress ), peritonitis
  • CAUSES: 1. When there is constriction of pancreas due to gall stones in gall bladder. 2. Alcohol 3. Metabolic disorders like hereditary pancreatitis, malnutrition 4. Carcinoma of the pancreas 5. Adverse reactions due to some drugs 6. Idiopathic (causes not known)
  • PATHOGENESIS:  It occurs because of abnormal activation of certain digestive enzymes like trypinogen into trypsin within the pancreas. In normal physiology conversion into trypsin takes place in Small Intestine but during acute pancreatitis it takes place in pancreas causing inflammation of pancreatic cells.
  • DIAGNOSIS: It can be done by CT-Scan or Abdominal sonography.
