It is a theorem that allows you to calculate the moment of inertia of a body through any axis of rotation provided that that 2 conditions are satisfied. The conditions are the following:

You need to have the moment of inertia of the body through its centre of mass.

The new axis that you are considering should be parallel to the axis mentioned in bullet point 1, hence the name ‘Parallel axis theorem’.

Once the conditions above are satisfied, you can calculate the moment of inertia of the new axis if you know the body’s mass and the perpendicular distance between the 2 axes mentioned above. In most cases, this theorem can save a lot of time as you do not need to find the moment of inertia using first principles.
