Parenchyma is one type of cells forming the ground tissue and pith in plants. These belong to simple permanent tissue category. These are living, polygonal cells with a large central vacuole and have intercellular spaces between them.

*Parenchyma containing chloroplasts are called chlorenchyma. The chlorenchyma help in photosynthesis.

*Parenchyma which contain large air cavities are called aerenchyma. The aerenchyma help in buoyancy.

*Some parenchymatous cells act as storage cells for starch in fruits and vegetables.

Meristematic tissues are found in plants. These tissues have actively dividing cells and are responsible for continuous growth in plants. Meristematic tissues gives rise to permanent tissues, which loose the ability to divide. However, few permanent tissues may become meristematic again due to requirement. Thus we can say, that all types of tissues in plants develop from meristematic tissue.
