a form or set of forms of a verb in which the subject undergoes the action of the verb (e.g. they were killed as opposed to the active form he killed them ).

When the subject of the sentence is not the active agent of the action and is shifted to a less important position, with the object and the action becoming more important, the verb is said to be in the passive voice.
Ex: The village was destroyed by the earthquake.
