Let the length and width of original rectangle be a And b

Area = ab

New length = a + 20% of a

= a + 20a/100

= a + a/5

= 6a/5

New width = b

New Area = 6a/5 × b

= 6ab/5

Increase in area = 6ab/5 - ab

= ab/5

Percentage of Increase = Absolute Increase × 100 / Original area

= ab/5 × 100 / ab

= 100 /5

= 20%
