Pericarp and its function

Explanation:

  • Pericarp is the ripened ovary wall that surrounds the kernel, and just inside it is the seed coat which represents a thin, strong layer lying between the pericarp and the nucellus.
  • Pericarp layers. In fleshy fruits, the pericarp is typically made up of three distinct layers: the epicarp (also known as exocarp), which is the outermost layer; the mesocarp, which is the middle layer; and the endocarp, which is the inner layer surrounding the ovary or the seeds.
  • Function of pericarp : It develops from the walls of the ovary. It provides protection to the seed. Secondly, in most of the fruits it is edible. So it is consumed by animals and birds and thus helps in seed dispersal.
