Periphyton are the fresh water organisms that cling or attach to the plants and other substrates in bottom sediments such as the cyanobacteria, algae, detritus and other microbes. They are used as food source by many invertebrates and fishes. They are important indicators of the water quality as they absorb contaminants hence cleaning the water by removing the contaminants and limiting their movement.
