what is peristalsis?


annuoyn: the involuntary constriction and relaxation of muscles of the intestine or another canal creating wave like movement which push the contents of the canal forward

Continuous contraction and relaxation of food pipe in order to push food down. When food enters the food pipe it undergo peristalitic movements to push the food in the stomach. And the food enters the stomach with the help of sphincter muscle.

The food bolus moves in the alimentary canal by a wave of relaxation followed by a wave of contraction. This movement of muscles is termed as "Peristalsis".
