Peristaltic movements are the rhythmic contractions that occur all along the oesophagus. These movements help in pushing the food down the alimentary canal into the stomach.

If this movement does not occur, then there would be significant problems in the digestive process and it would be difficult to have an efficient mean of pushing food down to the stomach for the next process in digestion.
