The photoelectric effect refers to the emission, or ejection, of electrons from the surface of, generally, a metal in response to incident light. When a photon hits an electron on a metal surface, the electron can be emitted. The emitted electrons are called photoelectrons.

When radiation with frequency greater than a certain minimum frequency(v_{0}) strike the surface of a metal, electrons are ejected. This minimum energy (hv_{0}) is called work function (W_{0}) and this phenomenon is known as Photoelectric effect.
