What is photosynthesis ?

✔ The word photosynthesis is derived from two words-

photo and synthesis.

✔ Here, photo means light and synthesis means to put together.

✔ In simple words photosynthesis is defined as the green plants prepare their own food in the presence of sunlight, carbon dioxide from air, water and mineral from the soil and chlorophyll present in their green leaves.

✔ Green plants are autotrophic. So, they can prepare their own food.

✔ In the process of photosynthesis, carbon dioxide, water and sunlight are required, in a result it release glucose and oxygen.

✔ Equation :-

• Carbon dioxide + Water + solar energy → Glucose + Oxygen

• 6CO2 + 6H2O + solar energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2.

✔ It can also be defined as plants convert light energy ( sunlight ) into chemical energy (water and glucose), which is used by them in their cellular activities.
