It's a verb followed by a preposition that gives the actual verb a different meaning.
For example, take has a different meaning than take out.
"Take this, it's a present" and "Take out the garbage!" In these two sentences, take has a different meaning whether it's followed or not by a preposition

sreedhar2: is "take out" a phrasal verb??
