The word 'Protozoa' is derived from the Greek word 'protos' means first ' , ' zoom' means 'animals'. The Protozoans have the following characteristics:

  • These are unicellular and mostly aquatic animals.

  • These may be free living, parasitic, symbiotic, solitary or colonial in incident.

  • The body of these organisms may be naked or covered by hard shells called pellicle.

  • The shape of the body may be irregular, spherical, oval, elongated or flat.

  • The cytoplasm is differentiated into two layers namely,

(a) Outer ectoplasm layer

(b) Inner endoplasm layer

  • These may be uninucleate, binucleate or multinucleate based on the number of nucleus.

  • The locomotion is achieved by finger like projections called pseudopodia, flagella or cilia.

  • Their mode of nutrition is heterotrophic.

  • The asexual reproduction takes place by means of binary fission or multiple fission.

  • The sexual reproduction takes place by means of conjugation.
