Public Interest Litigation:

In Indian law, public interest litigation means litigation for the protection of the public interest. It is litigation introduced in a court of law, not by the aggrieved party but by the court itself or by any other private party.

In simple terms, a PIL is a petition that an individual or a non-government organisation or citizen groups, can file in the court seeking justice in an issue that has a larger public interest. It aims at giving common people an access to the judiciary to obtain legal redress for a greater cause.

PIL was started to protect the fundamental rights of people who are poor, ignorant or in socially/economically disadvantaged position. PIL is important because there are several ignorant and poor people in India who are unable to lodge a complain.
