Answer:

**Pipeline transportation is one of the modes of transport that involves the use of hollow pipes in the transportation of water, crude oil, ( petroleum ), biofuels and gas. This mode of transportation is safer and cheaper than using tankers or trailers in the transportation of these liquid

**Merits

1.Rules out delay and transportational losses.

2.The pipes can be laid through difficult terrains and also under the sea.

Demerits

1.Cost of laying pipelines is very high and also leakage are not easy to repair.

2.There is limited supply in pipelines.

*Three important ‘networks of pipeline transportation’ in our country:

The oil fields from the Upper part of Assam to Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh via Barauni, Guwahati, and Allahabad. It consists of several branches from ‘Barauni to Haldia’ through Rajbandh to Maurigram.

Salaya from Gujarat to Punjab through Mathura, Viramgam, Sonipat and Delhi. It has several branches for connecting Koyali and other places.

The gas pipelines from the place of Hazira in Gujarat.
