Pituitary gland :-

  • Pituitary (Hypophysis) regulates so many body activities, it has been nicknamed as the "Master gland" or the "Conductor of endocrine symphony".

  • Pituitary lies in the "Sella turica" of the splendid bone and is attached to the hypothalamus by a short infundibular stalk.

  • In males, the pituitary generally measures about 1.3 cm in diameter and weighs about 0.5 gram.

  • The pituitary is a bit larger in females.

  • The pituitary gland secretes hormones which are basically proteins (peptides) or glycoproteins.

  • In human beings, the "Pars intermedia" is rudimentary and is in the form of a thin membrane.
