Plasmogamy is the process in which two gametes fuse together but their nuclei doesn't get fused.

  • In phycomycetes, the two haploid cells fuse to form a diploid cell 2n.
  • However in ascomycetes and basidiomycetes an intervening dikaryotic stage occurs that is two nuclei per cell. This stage is known as dikaryotic phase.
