If a medium in which the cell is, has a lower concentration of water than the cell, i.e., it is very concentrated solution, the cell will lose water by osmosis. Such a concentrated solution is called hypertonic solution. In this case, water crosses the plasma membrane in both directions, but in this more water leaves the cell than enters it. Therefore, the cell will shrink. In this situation, plant cell is said to be plasmolysed.

FOR CLEAR DEFINITION:

PLASMOLYSIS: When a living plant cell loses water by osmosis there is shrinkage or contraction of the contents of the cell away from the cell wall. this phenomenon is known as plasmolysis.
