What is polar nad non polar substances ? Please explain in simple terms.

in simple terms polar substance is the one which as negative charge on one and positive charge on the other atom eg, HCl where hydrogen has positive and chlorine has negative charge.whereas, non-polar substances have either negative or positive on both the atoms eg Cl2 where both the chlorine atoms have same charge.
