Positional isomers are those which have same carbon skeletons and same functional group but differ in their location

Example ; H₂C=CH-CH₂-CH₃(But-1-ene)

                H₂C-CH=CH₂-CH₃(But-2-ene)

The phenomenon in which different compounds having the same functional groups at different positions on the parent chain is known as position isomerism.

For example,

But-2-ene [CH_3 -CH=CH-CH_3]

and but-1-ene (CH_2 = CH – CH_2 - CH_3] are position isomers of each other as they have the same molecular formula C_4 H_8 and the same carbon skeleton but the double bonds are located at different positions.
